# Phone Numbers

> Add and manage your numbers, set your caller ID, register your business name, and let Spark protect your number reputation

Your phone numbers live in **Settings → Phone**. That's where you add numbers, pick your primary, set up caller ID branding, and control reputation protection.

## Adding a Number

<Steps>
  <Step title="Search by area code">
    In **Settings → Phone**, search for numbers in the area code you want — local to your market is usually best for answer rates.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick from available inventory">
    Choose a number you like from the results.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it">
    Give it a label so you can tell your numbers apart (for example, "Main line" or "FL leads").
  </Step>
</Steps>

The number is live for **calling immediately**. **Texting** requires A2P registration first — see [Texting Compliance](/messaging/compliance).

## Primary Number and Caller ID

One of your numbers is the **primary**. It does two jobs:

* **Default caller ID** — outbound calls show this number unless you pick another
* **Inbound line** — it's the number leads call back

You can keep several numbers and choose which one to call from on any given call in the [dialer](/phone/dialer) — for example, a number local to whichever market you're dialing that day.

## Reputation Protection

A number that gets flagged as "Spam Likely" kills your answer rates. Spark watches two signals on every number you own:

* **Spam-flag status** — whether carriers are marking your number as spam on recipients' phones
* **Answer-rate health** — whether the number's answer rates are degrading from heavy use

When a number is flagged or fatigued, Spark can rotate it automatically: the affected number is replaced with a fresh one so your answer rates stay healthy. Auto-rotation can be toggled in settings — leave it on if you'd rather not babysit number health yourself, or turn it off to manage replacements manually.

### Number lifecycle

| State    | What it means                                                  |
| -------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Active | Healthy and in use for calling |
| Flagged | Carriers are marking it as spam, or answer rates have degraded |
| Cooling | Pulled from rotation to rest |
| Released | Removed from your account |

## Caller ID Branding (CNAM)

Register your business name so it displays on your outbound calls instead of just a number. Registration is free and takes about 48–72 hours to propagate across carriers. A recognizable name on the caller ID is one of the cheapest answer-rate improvements available.

## Releasing a Number

Releasing a number removes it from your account. Release numbers you no longer need rather than letting them sit unused.

<Warning>
  Releasing is permanent — once a number leaves your account, you can't get it back. Keep your primary number unless you have a specific reason to replace it.
</Warning>

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Why did my number change?">
    Auto-rotation replaced it. Spark detected the number was flagged by carriers or its answer rates had fatigued, and swapped in a fresh number to keep your calls getting answered. You can toggle auto-rotation off in **Settings → Phone** if you'd rather manage this yourself.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do leads see my business name when I call?">
    After CNAM registration, yes. Register your business name in **Settings → Phone** and it displays on outbound calls once it propagates (about 48–72 hours).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I keep my number when rotating?">
    Rotation exists specifically to replace flagged numbers, so a rotated number is gone by design. The best way to keep a number long-term — especially your primary — is to keep it healthy: warm it up gradually rather than blasting high volume from day one.
